Map any company's competitive landscape on Specter in seconds, ranked by how directly each rival competes.
The Competitor Agent lives natively on every Specter company profile and can be activated at the press of a button. Under the hood, it sifts through companies surrounding your input company, dynamically builds out the landscape, then categorizes and ranks for your perusal.
This is live for every user today and is already picking up steam.
Early reviews are in..
Some of our power users picked up on the new feature as soon as it dropped:
Impressive, both output quality and UX are great! - Partner @VC / 600M AUM
Just a quick one: awesome competition analysis, So far (on other platforms) I experienced it like a "sales feature" but I did some runs and so far its really legit! - Investor @VC / 100M AUM
A data wiz tapped into the API immediately upon release:
"The competitor agent is great. I built this network graph for our portfolio using it". - Head of Data @ VC / 1.5B AUM
Now then, let's hop under the hood:
How the Competitor Agent works
Kickstarting the 60 second swarm is easy: navigate to a company profile and ask the competitor agent to map a landscape.
On the interface, you'll see the Agent build the set in real time.
Behind every landscape is a multi-step agentic process:
- Semantic matching: Specter's semantic search scans millions of companies for businesses similar in product, positioning, and behavior, not just keywords or industry labels.
- Live market coverage: the Agent expands beyond structured data with live web research, capturing newer entrants and emerging players not yet fully reflected in datasets.
- Size and stage-aware filtering: funding, valuation, revenue estimates, and growth signals keep the set to companies operating at a comparable level, the ones that realistically overlap in market impact.
- Ranking and relevance scoring: results are ranked on both similarity and how directly each company competes in practice, so true like-for-like competitors rise to the top.
- Deep classification: a more advanced model separates direct competitors (true alternatives), indirect competitors (adjacent or overlapping offerings), and loosely related companies (same space, different focus).
- Enrichment with key metrics: every company is returned with funding, valuation, and revenue estimates.
As we've mentioned: you get the answer in a minute or less, and you'll see the results being filtered out in real-time. If waiting isn't your thing, you can always navigate away from the Competitors tab to keep evaluating the selected company while you wait.
Availability via API & MCP
Competitive landscapes are also available outside the app via API, returning each competitor's score, the dimensions the market splits on, and a short summary. Pipe it into a screen, a model, or your CRM of choice. Here's an example snippet:
The Competitor Agents runs through the Specter MCP too, so you can ask for a competitor set from Claude or Cursor and get it back in whatever you're already working in. The response is cache-first and costs one credit. A set that's already been built returns at once, while a new one computes on demand. Nothing sits more than 30 days old before it rebuilds itself, and last_updated tells you when it last did. This means you'll never worry about stale data.
Slowly at first, and then all at once.
The Competitor Agent is the first of several agentic features we're adding to Specter this year. More of the product will work this way: the same underlying Specter data layer powering everything underneath, and agents handling the fetching on top, expediting your work and ensuring the right context pops up at the right time.
The Competitor Agent is live on Specter now. Pick a portco or some of the companies you've been tracking and try it out!
